The Choice to Be Shy

Growing up, I was painfully shy. I could hardly look a person in the eyes, and the thought of getting up and speaking in front of people would bring me to the point of tears. My mom and I joke to this day about how she always had to ask the sales clerk if I could have a fitting room to try on clothes because I was too scared to ask for myself.

For the longest time, I believed this was just my personality. I was the shy, quiet girl who didn’t like too much attention. But while it was true that I was more of an introvert, what I was believing about myself was, in fact, a trap of the Enemy meant to keep me in bondage.

On Andrew’s Gospel Truth broadcast, he has been doing a verse-by-verse teaching through the book of Proverbs. During this series, Andrew talks about Proverbs 29:25:

“The fear of man brings a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord shall be safe.”

New King James Version

Andrew says, “Any person who is afraid of people’s criticism and of people’s reaction to them is not a free person. . . . You need to recognize that fear of people [and] fear of what people have to say is a trap of the devil. Satan is trying to destroy you. . . . Fear brings bondage. Fear of what people [have] to say is not a free life.”

As I got into the Word more throughout my adult life, I began to realize that this fear wasn’t simply an unfortunate personality trait that I had absolutely no control over. This was bondage: a perfectly set trap to keep me caged in my small world and small thinking. As long as I clung to that lie, I remained right where I was, unable to move forward into what God had for my life.

So, I began taking steps of faith, acting confident even when I didn’t feel confident. Some might see that as being fake or two-faced. But I had to make a decision about which was going to be the higher truth in my life: how I was feeling or what God said about me. I decided that I was going to act on who the Word said I was rather than on how I simply felt at the time. And that has truly made all the difference in my life.

In his Gospel Truth Proverbs series, Andrew also says, “What a great way to live, to where it just doesn’t really matter what people say about you. It’s what God says. If you, in your heart, know that you’re doing what God has told you to do, you do not have to be validated and confirmed by other people. . . . That’s a great way to live.”

Today that shy, insecure little girl is working for Andrew Wommack Ministries, reporting in front of a camera to hundreds of thousands of people all over the world. God had much bigger plans for me than what I was allowing for myself. And you know what? He has bigger plans for you too. The only question is, which plans will you choose?

Don’t miss the Gospel Truth this month as Andrew wraps up his series on Proverbs. It will guide you to God’s timeless wisdom so that you can live your life of purpose.

It amazes me that this showed up. You described me almost to a t, minus the fact that I’m a guy.
I have been quite shy my whole life, and still am for the most part. I grew up in a community that was mostly catholic. In school a lot of the kids were catholic and related. They looked down on my family,
and I always thought it was because they were catholic and we were not. I did not do well in school and ended up quitting my 10th year, started working. Had problems keeping a job, ended up getting in trouble and spent half a year in a halfway house which was one of the best things to ever happen to me. There I got my GED and straightened myself out. Few years later I got married, didn’t last quite a year, but in the process I gave myself to the Lord, got baptized and moved on with life, in the wrong direction. Ended up getting married again, and again failed. I am now almost 61 years old, single and trying the best I know how to live my life following Jesus. Still kinda shy but in a current purpose driven life bible study with family members. I had my brothers live in girlfriend order Andrews teaching on Grace and Faith but feel she doesn’t want me to have the material. For some unknown reason she won’t respond to my asking to have coffee and check out the material. I don’t know how to go about asking again, don’t really want to ask again but want the material so I can possibly start another bible study with other friends. Sorry for rambling on so much.
I would like to get for myself the teaching on Grace and Faith and even the teaching on Proverbs.
I don’t have an email account, but thought maybe through this message if it reaches you I might be able to find out how I can get it.
I want to thank you for showing up on my fb in my time of need and listening to me.
Thank You again, Keith

This is so encouraging to read and something I feel God is challenging me about. I have always just thought I am the shy, quiet one who hates being the centre of attention too. I like that you acted confident even when you didn’t feel it, because you were trusting what God says about you above your feelings. I’m going to try and start doing that! Thank you for sharing x

@michael

We appreciate your question! Although we are unaware of Andrew sharing that he has had a colonoscopy, Andrew has shared that he has visited a doctor for a check-up.

Please know that Andrew is not attempting to dissuade anyone from seeking medical help by teaching about faith in the redemption of Jesus.

Christians often feel that they are caught between a decision to believe in healing by the stripes of Jesus or to go to a doctor and use medicine. Many of them see this decision as an “either/or” situation where they can only go one way or the other, with the overriding connotation that this decision is the “line in the sand” of whether they have faith or not.

However, faith is not decided by a decision to take or not to take medication. Faith is a product of relationship with the Lord! As we simply behold Jesus, He authors and finishes our faith (Heb 12:2). Knowing His love intimately awakens our faith (Gal 5:6) and fills us with all of His fullness (Eph 3:19). Faith comes by God's Word (Rom 10:17). Ultimately, the focus is to make relationship with Him the center of our lives. Healing, emotional freedom, and everything else we have need of, flows naturally from that relationship.

Audrey Mack addresses the conflict Christians face with seeking medical help while believing for healing at the "Healing is Here 2018 Conference". You can listen to her message for free here: https://l.awmi.net/2Hd1fJr . We believe this message will encourage you to cast aside any lies of the enemy and to receive God's love and acceptance. God bless you and your wife! - AWMI Team

@Linda

You are not alone! There are many people who have not realized how to walk in true humility, which is seeing yourself the way God sees you and acting in faith in what God says that you can do through the power of the Holy Spirit.
