On May 20, 2013 a massive EF5 tornado ripped through Moore, Oklahoma. As media coverage shared the tragic details of the storm's damaging winds, Andrew, like many who were touched by the devastation, felt inspired to do something to help. In search of a way to do provide aid, and physical relief for the people of Oklahoma, Andrew connected with a person he has known for a long time, Dr. Denny Nissley, and his ministry Christ in Action (CIA).
Denny's ministry has been in operation since 1982, and has been providing disaster relief since 1998, when he, and a team of volunteers, responded to a flood situation in Cuero, Texas. They have been among the first to respond to many of the nation's largest disasters over the last fifteen years. Their relief efforts have been so instrumental in helping those in distress that, at the request of The White House, they are currently developing a Faith Based First Responders Coalition to streamline a nationwide rapid response network to handle future disasters.
When Andrew made contact with Denny, just after the tornado had touched down, CIA already had a convoy of tractor-trailers on their way to Oklahoma to help pick up the pieces and to provide help and hope to the hurting. At the time of their conversation, Denny had 2000 volunteers either on the ground or on the move, heading toward Moore. While Andrew was not able to join the volunteers in person, he was still able to help; he and Jamie made their contribution to the relief efforts by making a financial donation. They focused their funds to help offset the fuel costs associated with mobilizing the relief effort.
Andrew saw their donation as an opportunity to be Jesus' hands and feet, providing the daily bread (Matthew 6:11) for those directly affected by the tornado. Andrew is encouraging those who feel led to help with the ongoing efforts (whether with volunteer time or by donating money) to partner with Christ in Action. Andrew said, "All donations go to support the cause, and no administrative fees are deducted. That’s a real blessing... Anything you can give will be a huge blessing to those in need."
